Excellent acting - Tootsie Reviews
Ok, I like "Mrs. Doubtfire" better than "Tootsie," but that doesn't make "Tootsie" a bad movie. Dustin Hoffman's acting was top-class, as usual. I was impressed by how womanly he seemed. Unlike many other crossdressing movies, the whole world isn't stupid. Dorsey (Hoffman) can seriously pass for a female.
Like "Mrs. Doubtfire," this movie is all about accepting others not for what they look like or what their name is, but who they are. Dorothy and Dorsey are the same person, but Dorothy is more lovable only because Dorsey has made a fool out of himself in the past.
In other words, if Dorsey could have started with a clean slate, his career could have been as successful as Dorothy's.
The relationships in this movie are just wacky. Characters are constantly confused by other characters' preferences, like the old doctor guy in the soap. Ironically, these relationships all center around Dorothy and disintegrate once he/she reveals his/her true identity. This means that those characters have been basing their judgements only on the outside.
There are several funny moments in this movie, but overall, "Tootsie" is meant more to make you smile than laugh. Again, it is a great movie, so don't judge it only in comparison with other similar movies.
